Through Mission Moments, we share how staff, volunteers, and supporters connect with our work. See how Surly Brewing Co.’s charitable arm, Surly Gives A Damn, gives back to local communities like The Food Group.

SGAD Strengthens Our Food System

Surly Brewing Co.’s charitable arm, Surly Gives A Damn (SGAD), has supported The Food Group for over 10 years. In fact, The Food Group was Surly Gives A Damn’s first ever project! Over the years, they have hosted food drives during free tours at Surly’s brewery, packed food in our warehouse, and gotten their hands in the dirt on our micro-farm. This year alone, SGAD volunteers have given over 167 hours to help with The Food Group’s emergency food response in light of COVID-19 and events of 2020. Right as the pandemic hit, SGAD partnered with 10 liquor stores to host a food drive throughout the entire month of April. Now, through the month of December, they’re inviting all to make sure everyone’s holiday is filled with abundance.

12 Days of Giving

COVID has interrupted every aspect, every routine, and every tradition in our lives this year. For some, this means an interruption in the ability to feed and care for their families. This holiday season, SGAD is providing safety nets for families who are struggling. Hunger, housing insecurity, and a lack of toys under the tree are all crises our community is facing at staggering levels this year.

Holiday Food Drive

Today, one in eight Minnesotans are hungry, compared to one in eleven in 2019. SGAD is partnering with many local liquor stores on a Holiday Food Drive running through the month of December. Bring in a non-perishable food item to participating liquor stores–look for the blue bins! In return, you’ll get a voucher for 20% off at the online Surly Company Store. You can also make a monetary donation from home.

The Food Group is a food bank that supplies other hunger relief agencies with fresh produce, frozen meat, grocery staples, and other household necessities. Food shelves distribute free food to individuals and families in their local communities.

The Food Group believes in food equity. They believe in culturally specific foods. They believe in meeting people where they are at. And most of all, they believe in dignity.
